Steamboat Art Museum Endowment Fund

Be a part of the mission to present and preserve the visual arts of Northwest Colorado. The collection of work at this museum reflects our cultural heritage. This endowment fund was secured by the generous donation made by Jan and Denny Stamp. Their granddaughter, Ashley Stamp, met an untimely death on Vail Mountain in 2004. Ashley’s positive character, love of athletics and her family’s presence in the local ranching community inspired the creation of the endowment.

Taking the Lead: Building strong community organizations

The Steamboat Art Museum was founded in 2005 and is the only fine art museum in Northwest Colorado. With the rehabilitation of the historic Rehder building in downtown Steamboat, SAM has become a vibrant cornerstone for the arts, offering exceptional exhibits and educational programming free to the public.

“An endowment provides a secure funding source for a nonprofit organization and gives it financial stability,” explained Tim Wohlgenant, executive director of YVCF. “It creates resilience and allows for continued operations during lean times.”

Beyond the endowment matching challenge, the Community Foundation supports local nonprofits by providing nonprofit training opportunities including board training and capacity building.  YVCF’s support of nonprofit organizations is rooted in being a meaningful partner that goes far beyond grant funding. The Foundation strives to make connections and provide knowledge and resources that support the causes and their leaders working toward the greater good of the community.

Now, with a generous donation to SAM from Denny and Jan Stamp and the partnership of YVCF’s Nonprofit Endowment Matching Challenge, fine arts will be accessible in Northwest Colorado for generations to come.  To honor their granddaughter Ashley Stamp, a promising young ski racer and an exceptional student whose life was prematurely taken in an accident on Vail Mountain in 2004, the Stamps established a $60,000 endowment and a $40,000 organizational fund for the museum. Through the Community Foundation’s matching challenge, SAM will receive an additional $10,000 from YVCF toward the endowment fund.

Betse Grassby, Executive Director of the Steamboat Art Museum, explained: “This gift enhances the Steamboat Art Museum’s ability to endure and carry out its mission to promote and present the visual arts to the community of Northwest Colorado, reflecting our culture and heritage.”

YVCF created the endowment challenge as an incentive for nonprofits to secure their ability to serve their community today and into the future.  A nonprofit with a $100,000 endowment receives approximately $4,500 annually in perpetuity.  Nonprofit endowments held at YVCF benefit from being pooled with $21 million dollars in YVCF assets and invested by Syntrinsic Investment Counsel.
