2024 Individual Philanthropist of the Year – Paul and Chresta Brinkman

Paul and Chresta Brinkman exemplify the power of giving and the profound impact that comes from a life dedicated to making a difference. Their philanthropy is not just about financial donations but about a deep-seated desire to leverage their time, talents, and resources for the greater good. It is a reflection of their intertwined experiences and values that have shaped their approach to supporting others.

For Paul, the journey began in his early years. He recalls his involvement with The Knights of Columbus during elementary school, where he first experienced the joy of giving. His volunteerism has since expanded to include significant roles with the University of Colorado Engineering Advisory Council and the Steamboat Youth and High School Girls Lacrosse teams. As a developer, Paul has contributed instrumental knowledge and expertise to nonprofit building projects, including the combined United Way and Integrated Community building. He was instrumental in the creation of Yampa Valley Community Foundation’s new home for philanthropy at 348 Oak Street, guiding the organization from concept to move-in -on time and on budget. His pro-bono time, expertise and insights were invaluable to the establishment of the Foundation’s forever home.

Chresta’s philanthropic journey began during her college years. Though she sometimes felt her contributions were modest, she learned that every effort counts. This realization became a driving force behind her involvement with numerous organizations, including the Steamboat Springs Board of Education and Junior Achievement. Her time spent volunteering with the Historic Hayden Granary and her strong support of Yampatika highlight her dedication to preserving local culture and the environment, while her passion for supporting children in need is reflected in her roles with the Colorado Hands & Voices O.U.R. Children’s Safety Project.

As a family, Paul and Chresta are most proud to have inspired their four children to support the community and causes that they are passionate about, including REPS, BookTrails, Northwest Rocky Mountain CASA, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and Children’s Hospital Microtia Atresia Clinic.

Paul and Chresta’s dedication to the Yampa Valley is a central theme in their philanthropic efforts. For them, this community represents more than just a picturesque landscape—it embodies a unique sense of belonging and mutual care. As they reflect on what makes the Yampa Valley special, they emphasize the profound sense of community and appreciation for the land. “The Yampa Valley is a diverse magical place where people have a distinctive recognition and appreciation for one another and for this land where we are so fortunate to live,” they say.

The Brinkmans’ philanthropy extends beyond their local community, demonstrating their commitment to global issues as well. One particularly poignant story is their initiative to provide aid during the early days of the war in Ukraine. Despite initial concerns about the safety of traveling to Eastern Poland, Paul and Chresta felt compelled to act. They organized a collection of essential supplies and were overwhelmed by the community’s response. The generosity of their neighbors not only supported a critical cause but also reinforced their belief in the power of collective hope and action.

Paul and Chresta’s reflections on the future of their philanthropic efforts are both inspiring and insightful. They speak about the importance of leveraging their skills, time, and resources to create lasting, generational impact. Their approach to giving involves aligning their efforts with their values and passions and ensuring that their contributions address both immediate and long-term needs.

In honoring Paul and Chresta Brinkman, we celebrate their unwavering commitment to embodying the true spirit of philanthropy. Their legacy is one of hope, community, and selfless giving, woven into the very fabric of their personal and family lives and this community they cherish so dearly. Their journey inspires us all to look beyond ourselves and to contribute to a greater good, embracing the power of hope and action in our own lives.
