Steamboat Springs, CO – Starting this Spring, every Routt County kindergartner will have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike. Through a coordinated community effort, donors and grants came together to fully fund the All Kids Bike® Learn-to-Ride Program at Soda Creek Elementary, Strawberry Park Elementary, North Routt Community Charter School, South Routt Elementary, Hayden Valley Elementary, and Mountain Village Montessori Charter School. The program includes Strider Learn-To-Ride Bikes, helmets, and curriculum. The schools will receive the bikes in the coming weeks and launch the program this spring.
The Mark Satkiewicz Legacy Fund – Dirt to Snow Fund as one of the funders to support this program. Amy Satkiewicz stated, “The Dirt to Snow fund is honored to be able to support the All Kids Bike Program in Routt County. This program removes barriers for all kids and encourages inclusivity in the Routt County Cycling Community. It is truly a privilege to align Mark’s Legacy with All Kids Bike
All Kids Bike® is a national movement, led by the Strider Education Foundation, to place Kindergarten PE Learn-To-Ride programs into public schools using donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations. To date, over 250,000 kids nationwide have learned to ride a bike through the program. In the next five years, approximately 2,630 local kindergarten students will join this growing list of nationwide kids who have already started the program. A total of 132 bikes (22 per school) will be delivered to local schools.
The bikes arrived on Friday, February 12th at each school.
Each school will receive everything they need to get their students pedaling including a proven, integrative curriculum, staff training and certification, child-friendly Strider Learn-To-Ride Bikes, and helmets. The fleet of dual-propulsion 14x Strider Bikes start as balance bikes and convert to pedal bikes. The Strider Education Foundation, the program provider, also offers continued support for each school to ensure everyone involved is successful for five years.
Wil Chapple, PE Teacher at North Routt Community Charter School told YVCF, “The joy and adventure that every student feels when they take their first pedal on gravel roads is a magnificent moment and I am honored every time I share that moment with a student.”
The Kindergarten PE Program is designed for children of all abilities and hopes to instill healthy habits at a young age. “One of the best ways to get kids active is to get them excited about bicycles,” says All Kids Bike board member Ryan McFarland, “It’s a skill that is going to serve them in life.”
